On Friday evening, February 20, 2026, the Governor of Punjab, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, officially launched a new solar energy system at the historic shrine of Bibi Pak Daman in Lahore. This initiative is part of a broader provincial effort to transition public and religious landmarks toward renewable energy to reduce electricity costs and ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
Key Highlights of the Visit
- Sustainable Energy Transition: The Governor inaugurated a high-capacity solar power plant designed to power the shrine’s lighting, cooling systems, and essential facilities.
- Inspecting Facilities: Following the inauguration, Governor Saleem Haider inspected the recently completed renovation and expansion of the shrine. He directed the Auqaf Department to ensure “uncompromising standards” in cleanliness and security for the thousands of daily devotees.
- Spiritual Observance: The Governor offered Nawafil prayers and made special Dua for the national security of Pakistan and the prosperity of the people of Punjab.
The “Green Shrines” Project
The solarization of Bibi Pak Daman is a flagship project under the Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department. With electricity prices reaching record highs in early 2026, the government has prioritized solar energy for high-traffic shrines to:
- Reduce the Financial Burden: Lower the monthly utility bills of the Auqaf Department.
- Ensure Comfort: Maintain fans and air-cooling systems during the upcoming harsh summer months, especially during the annual Urs ceremonies.
The New Expansion
The inauguration follows the major expansion of the shrine completed late last year, which increased the capacity of the main hall to accommodate over 3,000 pilgrims simultaneously. The addition of the solar system completes the “Modernization Phase” of the project, which also included a new marble courtyard and upgraded ablution (Wudu) areas.
