Imran Khan Scheduled for Second Eye Injection on February 25

Feb 21, 2026 | PTI

On Friday, February 20, 2026, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed that the incarcerated PTI founder, Imran Khan, will be moved to a tertiary care hospital in Islamabad/Rawalpindi on Wednesday, February 25, for his second scheduled eye injection.

The minister clarified that this hospitalization is strictly for a “limited duration” to administer the procedure under sterile, specialist conditions.

Medical Background: Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO)

The 73-year-old former Prime Minister was diagnosed with right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in late January. This condition, often caused by a blood clot or vessel blockage, leads to swelling (edema) in the retina and significant vision loss if not treated with regular anti-VEGF injections.

  • Treatment Timeline: * 1st Injection: Administered on January 25, 2026.
    • 2nd Injection: Scheduled for February 25, 2026.
    • 3rd Injection: Expected in late March 2026.
  • Current Status: A government medical board (comprising Prof. Nadeem Qureshi and Prof. M. Arif) reported on Feb 16 that Khan’s vision has improved from 6/36 to 6/9 (with glasses), and macular swelling has reduced from 550 to 350 microns.

Vision Loss Controversy: 15% vs. 85%

The medical reports have become a flashpoint between the government and the opposition:

  • The PTI Claim: Lawyer Salman Safdar informed the Supreme Court that Imran Khan has lost 85% of his vision in the right eye (leaving only 15%) due to what he described as “criminal negligence” and delays in initial treatment.
  • The Government Claim: Ministers have dismissed the “85% loss” figure as political rhetoric, insisting the latest board results prove the treatment is working and the eye is “substantially healthy” given his age.

Standoff Over Personal Physicians

Despite the scheduled hospital visit, the PTI and Imran Khan’s family (specifically his sister Aleema Khan) have rejected the medical board’s findings because they were not allowed to be physically present.

  • The Demand: PTI is demanding that Khan be treated at Shifa International Hospital or Al-Shifa Trust under the direct supervision of his personal physicians, Dr. Faisal Sultan or Dr. Aasim Yusuf.
  • The Govt Stance: Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry stated that while the party leadership was invited to the last examination, they failed to agree on a representative. He added that the government is responsible for the state’s most high-profile prisoner and will provide “best possible care” under official security protocols.

Supreme Court Oversight

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, is actively monitoring the situation. The court has already ordered that Khan be allowed specialist access and telephonic contact with his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, in the UK, which was facilitated on February 15.
