KARACHI, October 28, 2025 — The Sindh government on Monday announced the arrest of four individuals allegedly affiliated with a proscribed organisation in connection with the killing of journalist and television anchor Imtiaz Mir.

Mir, associated with Metro News TV, was fatally shot last month while returning home on the National Highway. According to police, six unidentified gunmen riding two motorcycles opened fire on his car, which was being driven by his elder brother. The anchor sustained multiple bullet wounds and later died at a private hospital.

The killing had sparked strong condemnation from journalist associations and political leaders, who criticised the delay in arrests and demanded swift justice. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had directed Inspector General of Police (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon to expedite the investigation and apprehend those involved.

At a joint press conference on Monday, Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, IG Memon, and Additional IG Javed Alam Odho announced the arrests. Lanjar said the operation was conducted jointly by Karachi police and a federal intelligence agency. “The suspects belong to a banned organisation that received instructions from abroad,” he stated, describing the development as a significant breakthrough. The motorcycle used in the attack has also been recovered, officials said.

A case had earlier been registered at Saudabad Police Station by Mir’s brother, Riaz Ali, under Sections 34 and 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The complaint named Umer Daraz and his two sons, Ahmed Bux and Aftab, alleging the attack stemmed from a land dispute in their hometown of Jacobabad. Police confirmed that both parties belonged to the same tribe and that Mir had previously filed a case against the same individuals in 2023.
