IRGC Strikes Aluminum Giants in UAE and Bahrain

Mar 30, 2026 | Iran, USA

On Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a coordinated “hybrid operation” using precision-guided missiles and suicide drones against two of the world’s largest aluminum producers: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) in the UAE and Aluminium Bahrain (Alba).

The IRGC officially claimed responsibility on Sunday, justifying the strikes as retaliation for “American-Zionist” attacks on Iranian steel and industrial infrastructure. Tehran has now formally abandoned the “eye-for-an-eye” principle, stating that future responses will be “disproportionate” and aimed at the total economic and military structures of its adversaries.

Significant Damage at EGA Al Taweelah

The strike on the Al Taweelah site, located in the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), is being described as one of the most economically damaging hits in the UAE to date:

  • The Damage: EGA confirmed “significant damage” to the facility. Interception debris and direct hits sparked three separate fires within the industrial zone.
  • Casualties: At least six employees were injured at the site. Fortunately, none of the injuries are reported to be life-threatening.
  • Production Impact: The Al Taweelah smelter is a global heavyweight, having produced 1.6 million tonnes of cast metal in 2025. While EGA has “substantial stock” already at sea or in overseas locations, the long-term impact on the world’s longest aluminum production line is still being assessed.

Alba Smelter Hit

Bahrain, which has intercepted over 550 projectiles since the conflict began, saw a direct breach of its industrial defenses:

  • The Target: The Alba (Aluminium Bahrain) facility—one of the largest single-site smelters outside China—was struck late Saturday night.
  • Casualties: Two employees sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
  • Force Majeure: Following the attack and the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Alba has declared force majeure on its deliveries, temporarily suspending several production lines.

Why Aluminum? The Strategic Rationale

The IRGC’s statement explicitly labeled these factories as “affiliated with the U.S. military and aerospace industries”:

  • Military Hardware: Aluminum is a critical component in the manufacturing of fighter jets, missiles, and armored vehicles.
  • Economic Leverage: The Middle East accounts for approximately 9% of the global aluminum supply. By paralyzing these smelters, Iran is directly impacting global aerospace supply chains and driving up commodity prices.
  • Investment Ties: The IRGC noted that these factories involve significant investment and technological partnerships with American defense firms, making them “legitimate targets” in their view.
