Jazz Commits $1 Billion to Power 5G Revolution in Pakistan

Mar 12, 2026 | Current Affairs

On the heels of the federal government’s successful 5G spectrum auction, Jazz has announced a massive $1 billion investment plan aimed at transforming Pakistan’s digital landscape. This capital injection, spread over the next three years, is designed to build the “strong and resilient” infrastructure required to support ultra-high-speed 5G services and improve existing 4G performance.

Building the 5G Backbone

Following its acquisition of 190 MHz of spectrum in the March 10 auction, Jazz has emerged as the most aggressive player in the race for next-generation connectivity.

  • Spectrum Advantage: With a new total of 284.5 MHz, Jazz has more “digital highway” space than any other operator to deploy 5G without compromising current 4G quality.
  • Trial Phase: CEO Aamir Ibrahim confirmed that Jazz is ready to begin 5G trials in Islamabad and Lahore almost immediately, following the final frequency assignment by the PTA today.
  • Network Modernization: A significant portion of the $1 billion will be used to upgrade existing cell sites to be “5G-ready,” reducing latency and increasing data capacity for enterprise and retail users.

Addressing the ‘Connectivity Gap’

Despite the push for 5G, Jazz acknowledged that a major portion of the population remains underserved.

  • 4G Expansion: Roughly 40% of mobile subscribers in Pakistan still do not have access to 4G.
  • Broadband Access: Nearly 25% of the population is outside of mobile broadband coverage entirely.
  • The Strategy: The investment will simultaneously target these “blind spots” to ensure that the digital divide does not widen as the country moves into the 5G era.

Empowering the Digital Economy

Jazz aims to pivot from a traditional telecom provider to a “ServiceCo” (Service Company), where its infrastructure supports:

  • Digital Payments: Enhancing the speed and security of JazzCash transactions.
  • E-Commerce & Freelancing: Providing stable, high-speed fiber-like speeds for the millions of Pakistani freelancers and small businesses.
  • Cloud & AI: Building the groundwork for cloud-based enterprise platforms and data centers that require the low latency only 5G can provide.

“This investment is about preparing the network for the future. It allows us to not only support 5G but to continue expanding reliable, high-quality connectivity to the millions who are still on the sidelines of the digital economy.” — Aamir Ibrahim, CEO of Jazz.

The Final Assignment

Today, Thursday, March 12, 2026, the PTA is conducting the final Assignment Auction in Islamabad. This session will determine the specific “blocks” (upper, middle, or lower) of the frequency bands Jazz and other operators will occupy. Once this is finalized, Jazz is expected to announce its 5G Beta Program for select corporate clients and high-traffic areas in Islamabad.
