ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a thorough technical audit of billing systems across all power distribution companies (Discos), stressing that comprehensive reforms in the power sector remain a top priority for the federal government.
While chairing a review meeting on Power Division performance in Islamabad on Thursday, the Prime Minister acknowledged noticeable improvements in some distribution companies but insisted that deeper structural changes are still needed to reduce losses and ensure transparent billing.

Performance Targets and Incentive Structure
To boost efficiency, the Prime Minister instructed the Power Division to set clear, time-bound Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all Discos. He also announced that the best-performing distribution company will receive national recognition and an official award to encourage healthy competition.
- Smart Meter Deployment: The Prime Minister called the nationwide rollout of smart meters essential to eliminate overbilling and minimise technical losses.
- Rural Solarization: He directed the development of village-level solar power projects to ease pressure on the national grid and reduce load-shedding in rural areas.
- Anti-Theft Enforcement: Strict action was ordered at all levels to completely curb electricity theft.

Officials briefed the meeting on steady progress during fiscal year 2025–26, highlighting key achievements in revenue collection and infrastructure upgrades:

Specialised Disco Support Units have already been established in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Lahore, Multan, and Hazara to help field teams address technical issues, improve recoveries, and crack down on illegal connections.
