LAHORE: Police have expanded the scope of their investigation into the attempted suicide of a female student at a private university in Lahore, amid indications that academic stress and family pressure may have played a role. The development follows an earlier similar incident involving a male student, prompting authorities to examine broader factors linked to student welfare and institutional oversight.

The incident occurred on Monday when a 21-year-old Doctor of Pharmacy (D. Pharmacy) student, identified as Fatima, attempted to take her life by jumping from the second floor of a university building. She was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, including fractures to both legs, injuries to her spine and lungs, and a head injury. Doctors said her condition has stabilised, though the next 48 hours remain critical.

According to police officials, preliminary inquiries suggest the student may have been under intense stress due to academic performance and family expectations. Investigators said Fatima reportedly found the D. Pharmacy programme difficult and had expressed reluctance to continue her studies, while her family wanted her to pursue the degree. Police sources added that a heated argument had reportedly taken place between the student and her family on Saturday over the same issue.

Following a visit from HED Secretary Ghulam Farid Kathia, officials at Lahore General Hospital provided an update on the injured student’s recovery.

Though the patient arrived in critical condition—suffering from severe blood loss and shock—prompt stabilization and blood transfusions have led to a positive response to treatment. However, Principal Prof. Farooq Afzal emphasized that the student is not yet out of danger, citing the upcoming 48 hours as a pivotal window for her recovery.

To ensure comprehensive care, a special medical board featuring experts from five different surgical and medical specialties has been formed to oversee her progress.
