Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a strong condemnation on Thursday regarding recent military provocations against Turkey and Azerbaijan. The Prime Minister expressed Pakistan’s full solidarity with both “brotherly nations,” warning that such escalations risk destabilizing the entire region during an already volatile Middle East conflict.
Iranian Drone Strike Hits Civilian Infrastructure in Nakhchivan
The diplomatic outcry follows a series of drone attacks on Thursday targeting Azerbaijan’s exclave of Nakhchivan. According to the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry, at least four Iranian drones were tracked entering their airspace. While one was neutralized, others struck civilian targets, including a school in Julfa and the Nakhchivan International Airport terminal, resulting in four injuries.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described these as “deplorable actions” and “nefarious” attempts to undermine regional peace. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war from spreading into new territories.

The regional spillover reached NATO territory on Wednesday when a ballistic missile, reportedly launched from Iran, was tracked toward Turkish airspace. The projectile was successfully intercepted by NATO defense systems over the Eastern Mediterranean.
In a statement on social media site X, PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the threat to Turkey’s sovereignty. He reaffirmed that Pakistan stands “firmly with the brave Turkish brothers and sisters” and highlighted the urgent need for diplomacy to uphold inter-state relations.
“Such attacks are condemnable and risk further tension. We emphasize the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to uphold respect for sovereignty and maintain peace in the region.” — Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also engaged in high-level talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, to discuss the security situation. Pakistan’s Foreign Office warned that these “clear violations of international law” could push the region toward a point of no return.
Key diplomatic developments include:

- Turkey’s Stance: President Erdoğan credited Turkey’s military strength for deterring the missile threat but joined Pakistan in calling for a regional ceasefire.
- Pakistan’s Role: Islamabad remains in close contact with Riyadh, Ankara, and Baku to coordinate a unified response to the regional flare-up.

What’s Next: Emergency OIC Session Requested
Following these attacks, reports suggest that Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey may call for an emergency session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the targeting of member states. The session would focus on establishing “red lines” for the use of drones and missiles in non-combatant regions.
