Quetta, Nov. 10 — Senior federal ministers, led by Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, travelled to Turbat late on Sunday to meet National Party (NP) President Dr Abdul Malik Baloch in a bid to secure the party’s backing for the government’s proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
According to officials, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti accompanied the delegation, which included several federal cabinet members. The visit came only hours after the National Party publicly announced its opposition to the amendment, terming it contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.
Sources familiar with the meeting said discussions lasted for about an hour and covered the current political situation and the government’s efforts to build parliamentary consensus on the proposed legislation. The ministers reportedly conveyed a special message from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Dr Baloch.
The outreach marks part of the federal government’s broader effort to win over smaller parliamentary groups and coalition partners amid growing opposition to the bill. The proposed 27th Amendment, which is being debated in the Senate, seeks major changes to the command structure of the armed forces and constitutional provisions concerning immunity and appointments.

Earlier on Sunday, the National Party issued a statement reaffirming its decision to oppose the amendment. The party’s central spokesperson said the NP had held extensive consultations with legal experts and internal committees before reaching a consensus.

“The proposed amendment weakens the spirit and structure of the Constitution,” the spokesperson said, adding that the decision to reject the bill was taken by the party’s constitutional bodies through a majority vote.
The National Party, which holds representation in the National Assembly, Senate, and Balochistan Assembly, said it would continue to advocate for constitutional balance and parliamentary supremacy.
