ISLAMABAD: Authorities on Wednesday issued a nationwide alert as Pakistan braces for widespread rain and heavy snowfall on January 22 and 23, warning that the weather system could lead to flooding of streams, landslides and road closures, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong weather system is expected to affect all provinces and northern areas, bringing rain, thunderstorms and snowfall over the next two days. In view of the forecast, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised citizens and local administrations to take precautionary measures to minimise risks.
The PMD said heavy rain and snowfall are likely in several northern and upper regions, including Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli and Rawalakot. These areas are particularly vulnerable to flash flooding, avalanches and temporary road blockages.
In Punjab, widespread intermittent rain and thunderstorms are expected across major cities such as Rawalpindi and Lahore, while Islamabad is likely to experience cloudy weather with intermittent rain. The PMD has also warned of heavy rain and possible hailstorms at isolated locations in the federal capital and adjoining areas.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are forecast to receive widespread rain, with snowfall in upper districts. Authorities have cautioned that slippery roads and reduced visibility could disrupt travel in mountainous areas of both provinces.

In Sindh, cold and cloudy weather is expected across most districts. Rain is likely in several cities, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana, which could provide temporary relief from dry conditions but may also cause urban flooding in low-lying areas.
In light of the expected wet spell, the NDMA has urged provincial and district administrations to remain on high alert, ensure the availability of emergency response teams and keep drainage systems clear. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to high-altitude tourist destinations, and to stay informed through official weather updates.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has specifically cautioned tourists and residents in Murree, Galiyat and surrounding areas to take extra precautions due to the likelihood of heavy snowfall. Authorities warned that congestion on mountain roads and sudden weather changes could pose serious safety risks.
Officials said timely preparedness and public cooperation would be crucial in reducing potential losses as the country faces another spell of severe winter weather.
