PM’s Tribute: “Shaheed Auon Abbas is a national hero. By stopping the terrorist at the gate, he sacrificed his life to save hundreds of others. His bravery will be recognized with a high civil award this Independence Day.”
Security and Investigation Update
The attack, which has been claimed by ISIS-K, is the deadliest in the federal capital since the 2008 Marriott bombing. During his visit, the PM was briefed on the progress of the investigation:
- Arrests Made: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that four suspects, including an “Afghan mastermind,” have already been arrested from Peshawar and Nowshera.
- Security Failure: CJP Yahya Afridi and the PM both acknowledged the need for “foolproof security” at religious sites, following reports that volunteers at the mosque were under-equipped.
- National Resolve: PM Shehbaz reaffirmed that the state would not rest until the “Fitna al-Khawarij” (TTP) and associated terror modules were completely eliminated.
The “Tarlai Massacre”
On February 6, at approximately 1:38 PM, a suicide bomber opened fire on guards at the Khadija-tul-Kubra mosque before detonating his vest. The timely intervention by volunteers like Auon Abbas forced the explosion to occur at the gate rather than inside the crowded hall, a factor that prevented an even higher death toll.
