KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has inducted new heavy vehicles into its operational fleet, financed through proceeds generated from the auction of obsolete and unused vehicles, as part of efforts to improve municipal service delivery and operational efficiency.
Speaking to the media at an induction ceremony held at the KMC headquarters on Thursday, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab termed the initiative a significant step towards strengthening the corporation’s capacity to deliver civic services across the city. He said that, with the approval of the City Council, the KMC decided to auction scrap and unused items, generating Rs227 million in revenue.
Out of these proceeds, Rs110 million was allocated for the procurement of heavy-duty vehicles, including mount trucks. The mayor formally handed over five newly procured vehicles to various departments, including Engineering and Mechanical (E&M), Anti-Encroachment, Parks and Veterinary services.
“Two vehicles have been allocated to the E&M Department, while one each has been provided to the Anti-Encroachment, Parks and Veterinary departments,” Mr Wahab said, adding that the remaining funds would be utilised to further strengthen the municipal fleet. He announced that five more vehicles would be purchased shortly for different departments, while repair work on five buses had already been completed.
Accompanied by Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan and senior KMC officers, the mayor said that the corporation was now financing improvements in civic amenities largely through its own resources. He attributed this to improved revenue generation through what he described as a positive and disciplined financial strategy.
According to the mayor, the induction of heavy vehicles will enhance field operations, accelerate the removal of encroachments, and improve maintenance and beautification work in parks and public spaces. He said these measures were expected to significantly improve the overall performance of KMC departments.
