Munich — Pakistan’s growing diplomatic and security clout was underscored at the 62nd Munich Security Conference, where Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held high-level meetings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other global leaders from February 13–15, 2026.
A senior US diplomat, Ambassador Mike Waltz to the United Nations, explicitly recognised Pakistan’s importance in multilateral diplomacy and regional stability in South Asia during conference discussions. “We could walk around the world — Kashmir and India and Pakistan — where we faced a very serious nuclear escalation,” he said, emphasising Washington’s enduring concerns about strategic balance in the region.

Ambassador Waltz also linked Pakistan to Washington’s broader engagement with Muslim-majority nations, noting: “having our goal of a network of friends — Muslim-majority nations such as Turkiye, Pakistan, and Indonesia involved.” He further referenced President Donald Trump’s convening of regional and Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan.
During the meeting with Secretary Rubio, Field Marshal Munir discussed matters of mutual interest, including global and regional security dynamics and counterterrorism cooperation, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.
On the sidelines, the CDF held talks with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Chancellor’s foreign and security policy adviser Gunter Sautter, and Chief of Defence Carsten Breuer, focusing on contemporary security threats, bilateral defence cooperation, and multilateral dialogue for global peace.
He also engaged with Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, and Gen Rodolph Haykal, Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, discussing bilateral military cooperation and regional security challenges.
The ISPR described the visit as aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s defence partnerships and expanding cooperation with key countries on pressing security issues. The engagements reflect Pakistan’s active role in multilateral forums and its strategic importance in promoting stability in South Asia and beyond.
