PPP and JI Clashes Mar Session Amid Regional Diplomacy Praise

KARACHI (April 11, 2026) — The Karachi City Council session descended into a violent brawl on Friday as members of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the opposition Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) traded punches, kicks, and hurled chairs in a chaotic dispute over seating arrangements. The physical confrontation occurred just moments after parliamentary leaders from all parties had united to praise Pakistan’s diplomatic role in the ongoing U.S.-Iran crisis.

At a Glance: The Council Ruckus

  • The Brawl: Violence erupted over a seating dispute near the Opposition Leader’s desk, leading to members being dragged to the ground and chairs being used as weapons.

  • Political Fallout: JI members staged a walkout following the clash, while Mayor Murtaza Wahab adjourned the house indefinitely.

  • Resolutions Passed: Despite the chaos, 13 resolutions were passed, including a major tribute to the country’s leadership for preventing a regional economic crisis.

  • Healthcare & Infrastructure: Approval was granted for increased stipends for KMC hospital trainees and the restoration of Empress Market.

From Diplomacy to Disorder

The session began on a rare note of consensus, with leaders from the PPP, JI, PML-N, and PTI lauding the federal government and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their mediation efforts in the Middle East. JI’s Saifuddin Advocate expressed concern for the Muslim Ummah, while PTI’s Mubashir Hafizul Haque noted that while the nation is concerned about Iran, internal issues must also be resolved through similar “mutual understanding.”

However, this unity evaporated when PPP members objected to JI councilors sitting in front of the opposition benches. The verbal spat rapidly escalated into a “battlefield” atmosphere. Mayor Murtaza Wahab later blamed JI for “spoiling the atmosphere,” while the opposition accused the PPP of pre-planned “hooliganism.”

Key Policy Approvals

Following the JI walkout, the remaining council members unanimously passed several key administrative resolutions:

  • International Recognition: A resolution acknowledging the effective diplomacy of President Zardari, PM Shehbaz, and the military leadership in managing the U.S.-Iran-Israel conflict.

  • Medical Benefits: Post-graduate trainees and house officers at KMC hospitals will see an increase in stipends starting July 2025.

  • Urban Development: Approval for 20 electric motorbikes for the Vigilance Squad and specialized maintenance for city bridges and roads.

  • Heritage Restoration: A plan to restore Empress Market with new dedicated sections for meat, groceries, and vegetables.

Constitutional Tribute

The house also passed a resolution honoring the 1973 Constitution and paying tribute to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto for their sacrifices for democracy. While the session achieved its legislative goals, the images of councilors scuffling on the floor have drawn sharp criticism, highlighting a stark disconnect between the “national harmony” preached in Islamabad and the political friction on the ground in Karachi.
