Rain, Snow Forecast for Northern and Western Regions from December 20

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain, wind and thunderstorms, with snowfall over hilly areas, in the western and northern parts of the country from December 20 to December 22, as a westerly weather system is set to affect large areas.

According to the Met Office, a westerly disturbance is expected to enter Balochistan on December 19 and move towards the northern regions from Saturday, bringing unsettled weather conditions across several provinces. The system is likely to lower temperatures in upper areas and improve moisture levels in otherwise dry regions.

In Balochistan, rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in hilly areas, is expected from Friday evening to Saturday. The areas likely to be affected include Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noshki, Harnai, Zhob, Musakhel, Turbat, Gwadar, Jiwani, Lasbela, Kech, Awaran, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Washuk, Chaghi, Kharan and Kalat. The PMD has advised residents and travelers in mountainous regions to remain cautious due to the possibility of slippery roads.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain with wind and thunderstorms, along with moderate snowfall in upper districts, is expected from Saturday night to Monday, with occasional breaks. Areas under the forecast include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Kohat.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are also likely to experience significant weather activity. Rain, wind and thunderstorms, accompanied by moderate to isolated heavy snowfall, are expected in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar, as well as Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur. These conditions are expected from Saturday night to Tuesday morning.

In Punjab, rain with wind and thunderstorms is forecast for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, the Potohar region, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Noorpur Thal and Layyah from Saturday evening to Sunday. Snowfall is also likely in Murree and the Galliyat during this period. Meanwhile, cloudy conditions with drizzle are expected in central and southern districts, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Multan.

Partly cloudy to cloudy weather is expected in most parts of Sindh on Friday and Saturday. The PMD has urged relevant authorities to take precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.
