Islamabad, Pakistan — Pakistan Railways has increased fares following the recent fuel price hike, raising economy class tickets by 5 percent and air-conditioned class by 10 percent, while cargo train fares go up by 20 percent. The new rates will take effect from Monday, March 9, 2026, though advance bookings made earlier remain unchanged.
The adjustment comes after the government raised petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs55 per litre — the highest single increase in the country’s history — due to disruptions in oil supplies through the closed Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israel conflict with Iran. The railway authorities have confirmed they will absorb part of the extra operational costs to ease the burden on passengers as much as possible.

Key Highlights
- Economy class fares increased by 5 percent; air-conditioned class by 10 percent.
- Cargo train fares raised by 20 percent, effective March 9, 2026.
- Advance bookings protected from the new rates.
- Pakistan Railways will bear additional operational expenses for passenger trains.
- Move follows record fuel price surge caused by Strait of Hormuz closure.
The decision reflects the difficult but necessary balancing act Pakistan faces in these testing regional times. With most of the country’s energy imports traditionally routed through the Strait of Hormuz, the sudden disruption has forced tough choices across the transport sector. By limiting the increase and absorbing some costs internally, the railways are showing a responsible approach that prioritizes ordinary travelers.
