The Saudi Ministry of Defense confirmed on Saturday, March 7, that it successfully thwarted a series of coordinated aerial attacks targeting the Kingdom’s critical energy and military infrastructure. In what officials described as a major defensive victory, air defense units intercepted a swarm of six drones and a ballistic missile before they could reach their intended targets.
Shaybah Oil Field: Interception Over the Empty Quarter
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, Major General Turki Al-Maliki, stated that six unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected and destroyed over the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert. The drones were tracking toward the Shaybah oil field, a “super-giant” facility located near the UAE border.
- Strategic Impact: Shaybah produces approximately one million barrels of crude oil per day.
- Infrastructure: The site is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s natural gas liquids (NGL) strategy, supplying the petrochemical sector.
- Outcome: No damage was reported to the oil field or its high-tech recovery plants.

Ballistic Threat to Prince Sultan Air Base
Simultaneously, Saudi air defenses neutralized a ballistic missile launched toward the Prince Sultan Air Base in Al-Kharj, approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Riyadh. This marks the third consecutive day that the base—a critical industrial and military hub—has been targeted.
“The Kingdom’s defenses are prepared to meet any threat to our sovereignty. We are coordinating with regional allies to ensure that energy supplies and military installations remain secure.” — Major General Turki Al-Maliki, Saudi Ministry of Defense.
US Presence and Regional Escalation
The Prince Sultan Air Base has served as a central logistical nerve center for the US Air Force during recent deployments. Satellite imagery from February confirmed a massive buildup at the base, including:
- KC-135 Stratotankers: Used for aerial refueling.
- E-3 Sentry (AWACS): Providing early warning and control for regional operations.
- Patriot & THAAD Systems: Providing the multi-layered missile defense that successfully intercepted today’s threats.

Following the attacks, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman met with Pakistan’s military leadership to discuss measures to halt further Iranian-linked aggression. The Kingdom has urged Tehran to “exercise wisdom” and avoid miscalculations that could lead to a full-scale regional conflict.
