PM Shehbaz, Turkish Chief Justice Vow to Modernize Judicial Cooperation

ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a new era of “Digital Justice” between Pakistan and Turkiye, emphasizing that the two brotherly nations must leverage cutting-edge technology to ensure the swift and efficient delivery of legal redress to their citizens.

The Premier made these remarks during a high-level meeting with Kadir Ozkaya, President of the Constitutional Court of Turkiye, who led a senior judicial delegation to the PM House on Tuesday. The meeting underscored a growing strategic alignment that extends beyond economics into the core of governance and the rule of law.

Key Highlights of the Meeting

  • Judicial Digitization: A commitment to share experiences in using digital tools to reduce case backlogs and improve court efficiency.

  • Economic Synergy: The PM noted that judicial stability is a prerequisite for the “comprehensive economic partnership” currently being finalized between Islamabad and Ankara.

  • Mutual Learning: Both nations agreed to establish a framework for judicial exchange programs to study each other’s constitutional and administrative successes.

  • The “Brotherhood” Pillar: Prime Minister Sharif reiterated that the deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Turkiye remain a stabilizing force in the region, especially during current global tensions.

Modernizing the Gavel: The Role of Technology

A central theme of the discussion was the transformation of traditional legal systems into tech-driven platforms. Prime Minister Sharif pointed out that Pakistan’s judicial sector could benefit immensely from Turkiye’s experience in integrating digital filings, virtual hearings, and AI-assisted case management.

“The goal is simple: faster and more efficient justice,” the Prime Minister stated. He added that by digitizing the judicial process, both countries could significantly lower the barriers for ordinary citizens seeking legal protection.

Towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership

The Prime Minister linked judicial cooperation directly to Pakistan’s broader economic goals. He emphasized that as the two nations move toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a robust and predictable legal environment is essential to facilitate bilateral investment and trade.

The Turkish delegation, led by Kadir Ozkaya, expressed its full support for this vision, noting that the Constitutional Court of Turkiye is eager to collaborate with Pakistan’s superior judiciary on matters of constitutional interpretation and the protection of fundamental rights.

Strategic Context: Ankara and the ‘Islamabad Bridge’

The visit comes at a time when Turkiye has been a vocal supporter of Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the US-Iran conflict. The Prime Minister thanked the Turkish leadership for their consistent support on international forums and noted that the “brotherly bond” between the two countries continues to strengthen across all sectors—from defense and energy to, now, the judiciary.

As Pakistan prepares for the April 10 Islamabad Talks, the presence of such a high-level Turkish delegation in the capital serves as a testament to the strong regional backing for Pakistan’s diplomatic and instituti onal stability.
