UNGA Adopts Resolution Urging Israeli Withdrawal from Occupied Palestinian Territory; Pakistan Calls for Turning ‘Promises into Action’

Dec 4, 2025 | Palestine

NEW YORK/ISLAMABAD: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution demanding the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied Palestinian territory, reaffirming the Palestinian right to self-determination and calling for renewed global efforts toward a lasting peace settlement.

The resolution, titled “Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine,” secured broad international support with 151 votes in favour, 11 against, and 11 abstentions, according to a UN summary. Pakistan was among the countries voting in favour.

The wide-ranging text urged urgent, collective diplomatic engagement to revive credible negotiations on all final-status issues within the Middle East peace process. It called for the timely convening of an international peace conference in Moscow, as envisioned under UN Security Council Resolution 1850 (2008), to advance a just and comprehensive peace framework.

UNGA Demands End to Israeli Presence in Occupied Territory

The resolution reiterated that Israel must fully comply with international law, including by ending its “unlawful presence” in the occupied Palestinian territory, halting settlement expansion, and evacuating all settlers from the occupied areas.

It also rejected any attempt to alter Gaza’s demographic or territorial composition and stressed the need for immediate unification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority. The Assembly further demanded Israel’s withdrawal from all territory occupied since 1967 and called for a “just resolution” to the Palestinian refugee crisis.

Pakistan: ‘World Must Turn Promises into Action’

Addressing the UNGA debate, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said the resolution was a reminder that the international community must now translate its words into meaningful action.

“Pakistan’s solidarity with the Palestinian people is steadfast, and we stand with them in their legitimate struggle for dignity, justice and self-determination,” he said, adding that Pakistan’s vote reflected its long-standing, principled stance on the issue.

Ambassador Iftikhar underscored the need to sustain the diplomatic momentum generated at Sharm El-Sheikh, where the Israel-Hamas ceasefire was signed. He said Palestinian-led governance, reconstruction and institution-building must be prioritised, with the Palestinian Authority playing a central role.

He called for the full implementation of the Gaza ceasefire, an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces and unrestricted humanitarian access. With winter approaching, he warned that large parts of Gaza remained devastated and required “sustained life-saving assistance”.

The ambassador stressed that settlement activity must cease and condemned all attempts to alter the demographic or legal character of the occupied territories, including around Al-Haram Al-Sharif.

To break the cycle of conflict, he said, the Israeli occupation of Palestinian and other Arab territories — including in Syria and Lebanon — must end.

“The world must move toward a credible, time-bound political process leading to a sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine along pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,” he concluded.
