KARACHI: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has reiterated that the timely completion of the long-delayed Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) hinges entirely on uninterrupted funding, even as Rs86 billion has already been spent on the project.

The statement came following a two-day visit by Wapda Chairman, retired Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed, who reviewed progress at key sites of the project, including the intake structure and pumping stations at Keenjhar Lake, the high-pressure water conveyance pipelines to Karachi, and one of the city’s filtration plants.

According to Wapda, the overall physical progress of K-IV stands at 64 percent, with construction ongoing at all major contract packages. The project has been divided into eight contract packages to facilitate fast-track completion.

During the visit, the chairman was briefed by the General Manager, Project Director, contractors, and consultants on site-wise and contract-wise progress, key targets, and completion schedules.

The Wapda chairman emphasized the critical importance of K-IV for Karachi, urging contractors to accelerate work by deploying additional resources, particularly on Pipeline-2 (PL-2), which is reportedly lagging behind schedule.

He further stressed the need for close coordination with the Sindh government to ensure smooth implementation and expressed hope that the provincial authorities would complete the water distribution and augmentation network in time to fully realise the project’s benefits.

The reminder comes after the federal government allocated only Rs3.2 billion in the current budget against the Rs40 billion required for K-IV, raising concerns over potential delays. Wapda reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project by 2026, contingent on the availability of timely funds.

The K-IV scheme is widely regarded as vital for alleviating Karachi’s chronic water shortages, providing bulk water supply from Keenjhar Lake to the metropolis once completed.
