TOBA TEK SINGH: At least 14 people were killed and 16 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a van on the Jhang–Faisalabad Road near the Adda Faqeer Di Kulli area on Wednesday, officials said.
According to Rescue 1122, police and district administration officials, the accident occurred when both vehicles were reportedly speeding. Initial findings suggested that one of the vehicles was attempting to overtake while the other was passing a sugarcane-laden tractor trolley, leading to a direct collision.
The bus was carrying players from the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences who were travelling to Lahore to participate in various sporting events. The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in nine passengers dying at the scene, while five others later succumbed to their injuries either on the way to hospital or after reaching the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Jhang.

Emergency responders reached the site shortly after the accident and launched a rescue operation. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several were reported to be in critical condition. Hospital sources said that emergency measures were taken to treat the wounded, while additional medical staff were called in to handle the influx of casualties.

Deputy Commissioner Ali Akbar Bhinder and District Police Officer Bilal Iftikhar Kiani visited both the accident site and the DHQ Hospital to oversee rescue and relief efforts. They directed officials to ensure timely medical care for the injured and ordered a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident.
Police officials said that preliminary assessments pointed to overspeeding and risky overtaking as the main factors behind the crash. However, a formal inquiry has been initiated to determine responsibility and whether any traffic violations were involved.
Road accidents remain a major concern across Punjab, where congested highways, poor enforcement of traffic laws and reckless driving frequently lead to fatal incidents. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, particularly on busy intercity roads.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the university sports contingent, with officials and fellow students expressing grief over the loss of young lives. University authorities said they were in contact with local administration and families of the victims to provide assistance and support.
