ISLAMABAD — The opposition alliance on Friday threatened nationwide protests if the government continues to prevent jailed Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from meeting his sisters and senior party leaders, accusing authorities of suppressing democratic rights and bypassing parliamentary norms.
Speaking at a joint press conference outside Parliament House, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) President Mehmood Achakzai said political leaders from Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab had been urged to hold back from taking to the streets — a restraint he warned may not last.
“We have stopped Sindhis, Baloch, Pashtuns, and Punjabis from taking to the streets against the government and its policies; otherwise, they would come out and create problems for the rulers,” Achakzai said. He accused the government of reducing parliament to a “rubber stamp,” alleging that National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq was taking instructions “from elsewhere.” He further claimed the opposition was being denied the opportunity to raise pressing issues, including killings in tribal districts.
Achakzai questioned why Imran Khan continued to be denied meetings with his sisters and PTI colleagues. “The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is sitting outside Adiala Jail, but no one is paying any heed to his request to meet the PTI founder,” he added.

PTI leader and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser echoed the criticism, alleging that “democracy had been buried” in the recent by-elections. He cited the contest in Haripur, where the wife of former opposition leader Omar Ayub was a candidate, claiming discrepancies between results recorded on Form 47 and those “altered on a computer.”

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the opposition wished to remain within the parliamentary system but insisted that alleged manipulation of by-election results had made continued participation untenable. “As far as I know Imran Khan, he will not allow us to be part of parliament anymore,” he said, suggesting the party may reassess its future strategy if its demands remain unmet.
The opposition alliance called on the government to immediately allow access to Imran Khan and to ensure transparency in electoral processes. Leaders warned that failure to address these concerns could lead to widespread public demonstrations in the coming days.
