NADRA Cancels 4.2 Million CNICs of Deceased Individuals

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has concluded a massive nationwide verification exercise to purge its database of deceased citizens whose families had failed to report their deaths. This move is part of a broader “war austerity and governance” effort to ensure the accuracy of national demographic data and prevent potential misuse of active identity cards belonging to the deceased.

Purging the Database: 4.2 Million Cancellations

The reconciliation process identified that while these 4.2 million deaths were recorded at the Union Council level, the information had not been transmitted to or updated with NADRA.

• Voluntary Cooperation: Following recent facilitation measures, families of approximately 3 million deceased individuals have already voluntarily approached NADRA to cancel cards.
• Discrepancy Correction: The move aims to eliminate “ghost” identities that skew national statistics and could potentially be used for fraudulent voting or financial activities.

What to Do if Your CNIC was Mistakenly Canceled

NADRA has acknowledged that in rare cases, a living person might be marked as deceased due to clerical errors or malicious reporting by relatives.

• Immediate Restoration: If your card is blocked, visit the nearest NADRA Registration Center (NRC). Upon biometric verification, your CNIC will be restored immediately and without any fee.
• Information Transparency: NADRA will provide you with details of the Union Council where the death was registered and the identity of the relative who reported it, allowing you to pursue legal correction at the source.

The “14 Million Children” Outreach

A major gap has been identified in the registration of minors. While 14 million children have birth certificates from Union Councils, they do not yet have a Child Registration Certificate (B-Form).

• SMS Alerts: NADRA has begun sending reminder messages to parents/guardians.
• Requirement: Parents must visit an NRC with the child’s birth certificate and their own original CNICs to obtain the B-Form.

NADRA Faisalabad: Locations & Revised Timings

Following the federal government’s notification of a 4-day workweek, NADRA offices in Faisalabad have adjusted their schedules. Note: Standard NRCs are now closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
