PM Shehbaz Arrives in Quetta for Day Long Visit

QUETTA— Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in the provincial capital on Thursday for a critical, day-long visit centered entirely on reviewing Balochistan’s rapidly deteriorating security matrix.

The premier’s emergency visit comes on the heels of a grim disclosure by the military, which revealed that a coordinated wave of terrorist attacks and subsequent counter-operations have claimed the lives of at least 42 people—primarily security and law enforcement personnel—across the province since July 5.

Key Developments

  • High-Level Huddle: PM Shehbaz is chairing an emergency high-profile security meeting to re-evaluate counter-terrorism strategies and the law-and-order situation.
  • Top-Tier Delegation: The premier is accompanied by senior federal aides, including Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah.
  • Provincial Reception: Upon landing, the PM was received at the airport by Balochistan Governor Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and top civil and military leadership.

Escalating Violence Triggers Federal Intervention

The visit follows a direct briefing by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who detailed three major terrorist strikes executed over the last few days. These included a lethal armed assault on the outskirts of Quetta on July 5, an attack targeting a police check post in Ziarat on July 6, and a brazen ambush on an army convoy in Bela on Wednesday.

In response to the surge, the military leadership warned perpetrators and their facilitators to expect “no rationality and proportionality” as security forces intensify intelligence-based operations to hunt down the networks involved. Turning up the diplomatic pressure, the ISPR chief squarely blamed hostile external actors, pointing to cross-border operational footprints stemming from Afghanistan and explicit backing from India, aimed at destabilizing Pakistan’s internal security and economic progress.
