Situated next to the amazing Badshahi Mosque, the Lahore Fort (known locally as Shahi Qila) is a citadel covering more than 20 hectares in the Walled City of Lahore. Although its history goes back a long time, the fortress was built entirely of brick in the 16th century under Emperor Akbar. Over the years, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb added to it. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. It remains a lasting sign of the power and artistic skills of the Mughal Empire.
Key Architectural Highlights
Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors): This royal building was constructed during Shah Jahan’s reign in 1631. It features mirrors set in white marble flowers (Pietra Dura). These mirrors shine brightly when lit with candles.
The Picture Wall: This wall is on the northern part of the fortress. It is 1,450 feet long. It has thousands of colorful tiles that show scenes of hunting, fights between elephants, and pictures of the royal court.
Grand Gateways: The large Alamgiri Gate was built by Aurangzeb. Faces the Badshahi Mosque. Another gate is the Shah Burj Gate, which was used as the entrance to the rooms.
Naulakha Royal Quadrangle: The special pavilion made of marble has a roof. It is next to Jahangir’s Quadrangle and the green gardens in the middle.

Best Time to Visit
October to March is the best time because the weather is nice. Start early in the morning around 8:30 AM to see the whole area before the heat gets too strong.
Opening Hours
The place is open every day from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The ticket office closes around 4:30 PM.
Entry Ticket
Local visitors have a special ticket. Tourists from countries need a regular ticket. A separate ticket is needed to enter the Sheesh Mahal.
