KARACHI, Sept. 10 — At least eight people have lost their lives and more than 300 residents have been relocated after heavy monsoon rains swelled the Malir and Lyari rivers, flooding parts of Karachi, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.

Rising Death Toll

Rescue services confirmed that four additional deaths occurred today, including three men and a woman whose van was swept away by rain-filled Konkar Nadi in Gadap Town. The Edhi Foundation said rescuers recovered their bodies while search efforts for missing people continued.

Another casualty, 18-year-old Ahmed Qadir, died of electrocution in North Nazimabad, police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed said.

Rescue and Relief Operations

Rescue 1122 teams reported pulling two men from the Lyari river and saving one person from the Malir river, though another man, identified as Farhan Akram, remains missing.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said at least 318 people living near the rivers had been moved to safety.

Government Response

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah toured affected areas, including Saadi Town and Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway, where rumors circulated that a road section had collapsed. Shah dismissed the claims, clarifying that the damaged portion was still under construction and not open to traffic. He urged the public to “focus energy on constructive efforts.”

Rainfall Data and Flood Impact

The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded the heaviest rainfall in DHA Phase 7 at 32.6 millimeters, followed by 20mm at PAF Masroor Base and 19mm in Keamari.

Floodwaters entered Saadi Town after overflow from Lath and Thado dams, prompting joint rescue operations by Rescue 1122 and the Pakistan Army.

Precautionary Measures

The Sindh government has ordered all schools across Karachi Division to remain closed Thursday due to safety concerns and forecasts of further rain. The Met Office said the weather system near Karachi is expected to weaken but warned of more drizzle and light showers in the coming days.

PM’s Statement

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the National Disaster Management Authority to assist Sindh authorities in relief efforts and expressed grief over the lives lost in Gadap.

“Relief and rehabilitation of affected families must be the top priority,” he said in a statement, calling for the quick restoration of damaged infrastructure.
