ISLAMABAD — In a historic leap toward “Education 4.0,” the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training has officially notified the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics into the national curriculum. Starting with the April 2026 academic session, schools and colleges in the federal capital will offer AI as a formal subject, marking Pakistan’s most ambitious tech-driven educational reform to date.
The AI Curriculum Rollout
- Start Date: April 2026 (New Academic Session).
- Target Areas: All public and private schools/colleges in Islamabad.
- Grading Structure:
- Grades 1–5: Non-credit subject (no exams, activity-based).
- Grades 6–8: Optional choice between Computer Science and AI.
- Grades 9–12: Formal Elective Subject with board examinations.
- Examining Body: Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE).
Curriculum Breakdown: From Play to Programming
The National Curriculum Council (NCC), led by Director Dr. Tabassum Naz, finalized the “AI & Robotics Curriculum for Grades 1–12” after extensive consultation with provincial stakeholders. The policy aims to develop competencies in Computational Thinking, Robotics Design, and Intelligent Systems.
- Primary Level (Nursery–Grade 5): The focus is on “learning with fun.” Students will explore basic tech navigation, coding logic through games, and digital citizenship without the pressure of formal testing.
- Secondary Level (Grades 6–12): Students will dive into advanced modules including Automation, Ethical Use of Tech, and Real-World Problem Solving. The curriculum is designed to align with international best practices, preparing students for the global job market.
Implementation and Provincial Adoption
While the policy is mandatory for Islamabad, education remains a devolved subject under the 18th Amendment. However, federal officials are optimistic about nationwide adoption.
“Provinces were on board during the finalization process. Since this curriculum was developed with their input, we anticipate a phased implementation across the country,” stated a Ministry official.
To support this transition, a pilot project has already been launched in selected schools using AI-powered personalized learning systems to tailor lessons to individual student paces.
