Islamabad, Ankara Agree to Boost Trade Ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Türkiye have agreed to speed up efforts to strengthen trade and economic relations, with a target of raising bilateral trade to $5 billion.

The understanding was reached during the 16th session of the Pakistan-Türkiye Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), held in Islamabad on September 8-9. The meeting was co-chaired by Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Türkiye’s Minister of National Defence Yaar Güler.

Highlights:

Pakistan and Türkiye set $5bn bilateral trade target.

First negotiations on Trade in Goods Agreement in October 2025.

Boost in connectivity via ITI Railway and TURPAK Corridor.

Both sides decided to fast-track the “Pakistan-Türkiye Trade in Goods Agreement.” The first round of in-person talks on the deal will take place in October 2025. The agreement focuses on expanding market access across 24 sectors, including trade, energy, ICT, education, and health.

The two countries also agreed to strengthen business-to-business links, promote digital trade, and improve customs cooperation. Regional connectivity remained a key agenda point, with progress on the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) Railway Corridor and the TURPAK Transport Corridor.

In the energy sector, Pakistan and Türkiye will form Sub-Working Groups to explore opportunities in renewable energy, LNG, hydropower, and electric vehicle infrastructure.
