LAHORE, Nov 11: The Punjab Police registered 41 new cases against individuals and entities accused of violating environmental laws as part of the province’s ongoing crackdown on activities contributing to smog and air pollution, a spokesperson said on Monday.
The latest cases were lodged in various districts — including Lahore — during the past 24 hours. Several violators were arrested, while others were fined for non-compliance with anti-smog regulations.
According to the police spokesperson, 520 individuals were fined a total of Rs1.186 million, and 95 people were issued warnings for offences such as stubble burning, industrial smoke emissions, and vehicular pollution. The violations included 115 cases of crop residue burning, 242 related to smoke-emitting vehicles, four cases linked to industrial units, and eight concerning brick kilns.

Providing an overview of this year’s operations, the police said that 2,332 cases had been registered so far, leading to 2,053 arrests across Punjab. In total, 88,300 individuals were fined over Rs220 million, and 11,363 were issued warnings. The breakdown of offences includes 1,284 cases of stubble burning, 53,051 smoke-emitting vehicles, 1,391 industrial violations, and 2,077 cases at brick kilns.
Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar has directed field officers to intensify anti-smog operations, particularly along highways, industrial zones, and agricultural areas. He instructed that strict and immediate action be taken against those found violating smog-related standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Simultaneously, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has stepped up surveillance to identify environmental violations in Lahore and other districts. Using modern cameras and drones, the PSCA detected 540 violations in the last two days. Action was initiated against 283 smoke-emitting vehicles, while reports on five stubble burning sites and 10 smoke-producing industrial units were forwarded to the relevant authorities.
A PSCA spokesperson urged citizens to assist law enforcement agencies by reporting any environmental violations to the emergency helpline 15, stressing that public cooperation was vital to achieving a cleaner and healthier Punjab.
