Dec 1, 2025 | Art & Culture

In a significant win for Pakistan’s cultural diplomacy, renowned calligrapher Muhammad Azeem Iqbal has been conferred the prestigious Global Ambassador Award by the Diplomatic Insight Group (DIG). The award, announced on Thursday, November 27, 2025, recognizes Iqbal’s exceptional, decades-long contribution to preserving, revitalizing, and globalizing the classical tradition of Islamic calligraphy.

The recognition underscores the unique power of this art form to serve as a cultural bridge, carrying a universal message of peace, harmony, and the spiritual richness of the Islamic world far beyond Pakistan’s borders.

Weaving History with Gold Leaf

For over thirty-five years, Azeem Iqbal has dedicated his life to this intricate art, earning acclaim for a style that seamlessly blends the techniques of early Islamic periods with contemporary expression. He is not merely copying ancient texts; he is breathing new life into a timeless heritage.

Iqbal is celebrated for his commitment to traditional mediums, often using meticulously prepared materials like bone, wood, leather, and deer skin. He uses delicate applications of gold and silver leaf to give his work a luminous, eternal quality.

A distinctive practice, which he pioneered, is the use of Aab-i-Zam Zam (Zam Zam water) to prepare his pigments for Qur’anic verses, imbuing his calligraphy with a deeper, tangible spiritual resonance. He masterfully utilizes multiple scripts, including Kufic, Naskh, Thullus, and the flowing Nastaliq.

An Ambassador of Culture

Iqbal’s work has long been a quiet, effective tool of Pakistani public diplomacy. His status as a cultural ambassador is rooted in the high visibility and official use of his art.

The Government of Pakistan has presented Iqbal’s masterful artworks as official state gifts to more than thirty-two heads of state, making his pieces a formal representation of the nation’s artistic and spiritual identity.

His major installations are housed in leading national institutions, including a celebrated masterpiece at the National Monument Museum in Islamabad, demonstrating his deep engagement with public art and national projects.

Teaching the Next Generation

Beyond his prolific output of over 5,000 artworks, Iqbal has dedicated the last twenty-five years to ensuring the longevity of the art form by teaching classical calligraphy at institutions like the Punjab Council of the Arts, Rawalpindi. He has pioneered educational concepts, such as portraying Islamic history through the chronological evolution of Qur’anic calligraphy, helping the next generation understand the artistic development of their heritage.

The Global Ambassador Award is a powerful testament not only to Muhammad Azeem Iqbal’s individual artistic mastery but also to the enduring role of Pakistani artists in safeguarding and elevating the Islamic artistic heritage on the world stage.
