CHARSADDA, May 5 — Unidentified gunmen assassinated Maulana Muhammad Idrees, a prominent religious scholar and former member of the provincial assembly, in the Tariqabad Utmanzai area on Tuesday. The senior JUI-F leader was traveling from his residence in Tarangzai to a local religious seminary when his vehicle was ambushed. According to police officials, the attack also left two security personnel wounded. Authorities have since recovered CCTV footage from the vicinity to assist in identifying the assailants. The late cleric, who served as the JUI-F district head, was a respected advisor to the party leadership and hailed from a family with a long history of political and religious service.

The assassination has triggered a wave of condemnation across the country’s political spectrum. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both described the incident as a cowardly act that would not weaken the national resolve against terrorism. Provincial leadership, including the Governor and Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have demanded a swift inquiry, emphasizing that the loss of such a seasoned scholar is a significant blow to the region.
In the wake of the tragedy, the JUI-F leadership described the killing as a deliberate attempt to incite unrest.
