ISLAMABAD: Militants in Pakistan faced their heaviest losses in a decade during October 2025, as security forces expanded counterterrorism operations nationwide, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).

The think tank’s monthly report revealed that 355 militants were killed last month — the highest monthly figure in ten years — while 72 security personnel and 31 civilians, including a peace committee member, also lost their lives. Another 92 security officials, 48 civilians, and 22 militants sustained injuries during the same period.

PICSS documented 89 militant attacks in October, marking a 29 per cent increase from 69 in September. However, total fatalities fell by 19pc, reflecting intensified preventive and retaliatory operations. The report also recorded 55 abductions by militant groups — the highest monthly figure in a decade — and 22 arrests of suspected militants.

The data showed regional variations in violence. In Balochistan, militant attacks rose slightly from 21 to 23, yet civilian and security personnel deaths dropped by over 50pc. Security forces killed 67 militants in the province — the highest monthly toll since 2002 — signalling what PICSS described as a “notable improvement” in the province’s security landscape.

In the former tribal areas, 22 militant attacks resulted in 31 deaths, including 18 security personnel. Counterterrorism operations in the region killed 209 militants, the largest one-month total since November 2014. Among those eliminated was Qari Amjad, a senior Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader and the group’s former deputy emir, marking one of the most significant blows to the TTP in years.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 37 militant attacks, up from 25 in September, leaving 48 people dead, while operations there killed 55 militants. In Sindh, three attacks killed three civilians, and in Punjab, a low-intensity explosion targeted a gas pipeline in Mianwali.

PICSS reported that from January to October 2025, Pakistan has witnessed 2,853 deaths linked to militancy — including 1,734 militants, 601 security personnel, and 497 civilians.

The institute concluded that despite persistent threats, the sharp increase in militant fatalities reflects “growing effectiveness and precision” in Pakistan’s counterterrorism strategy.
