DG ISPR Exposes PTI’s Resistance to Counterterrorism and Afghan Alignment

Feb 28, 2026 | PTI

The DG ISPR highlighted a troubling shift in the KP government’s strategy, alleging that the provincial leadership is bypassing federal authority to seek guarantees from the Afghan Taliban regime.

  • Appeasement Policy: Lt Gen Chaudhry criticized calls from the KP Chief Minister for Afghan security guarantees, questioning why a provincial government would seek help from a regime that “hosts and is controlled by global terrorist organizations.”
  • Subverting Sovereignty: The military spokesperson dismissed the provincial government’s opposition to military operations as “rhetoric,” asking if the PTI’s alternative was to “sit at the feet of terrorists” or hand over political authority to Fitna al-Khawarij (TTP).

The “Political-Terror Nexus” in KP

The briefing presented a grim picture of governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where political patronage has allegedly allowed militancy to flourish:

  • Conducive Environment: Of the 5,397 terror incidents in 2025, 3,811 occurred in KP. The DG ISPR attributed this concentration to a “nexus between political, criminal, and terror elements.”
  • Economic Drivers: He noted that unchecked illegal mining and the spread of illegal weapons in the province—often overlooked by provincial authorities—are directly fueling the “war economy” of terrorist groups.
  • Resisting the State: Lt Gen Chaudhry stated that the PTI leadership is “confronting anti-terrorism operations at every forum,” effectively acting as a barrier to the federal government’s Vision Azm-i-Istehkam.

Afghanistan: The Operational Base

The ISPR chief reiterated that Afghanistan has become the global center for terrorism, failing all Doha Agreement commitments.

  • Afghan Involvement: All 10 major high-impact terror attacks in 2025 were carried out by Afghan nationals.
  • India-Taliban Link: The military spokesperson alleged that India provides financial and logistical support to terrorists who utilize Afghan soil as a safe haven to target Pakistan.

A National War, Not a Political Choice

Rejecting the idea that counterterrorism is solely the army’s responsibility, the DG ISPR called for a collective national struggle.

  • Sacrifices Denied: He condemned PTI rhetoric that suggests security personnel are sacrificing their lives for “minerals or dollars,” describing such claims as a grave insult to the 1,235 martyrs of 2025.
  • Constitutional Writ: The spokesperson clarified that the Pakistan Army is a federal force and no provincial leader has the authority to “hand over their areas to terrorists” for political gain.

The military has signaled that it will no longer tolerate political interference in security operations.
