TURBAT — In a significant shift for Balochistan’s nationalist politics, former Provincial Finance Minister Syed Ehsan Shah announced on Friday his resignation from the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M). Breaking a three-year alliance, Shah confirmed the revival of his own political entity, the Pakistan National Party (Awami), signaling a fresh divide within the province’s nationalist camp.

Critique of BNP-M: The “Rigid” Leadership Gap
Speaking at a press conference in Turbat, Ehsan Shah explained that while he joined BNP-M in 2023 with the hope of uniting Baloch nationalist forces, the partnership had become untenable. He specifically pointed to the “rigid political approach” under Sardar Akhtar Mengal, suggesting that the party’s current direction failed to accommodate the broader interests of his constituency.
Despite the split, Shah maintained a level of diplomatic decorum, stating, “I held no personal grievance against Mr. Mengal.” He framed the move as a return to his original political identity rather than a personal feud.

Impact on the Nationalist Vote Bank
The revival of the Pakistan National Party (Awami) is expected to recalibrate the power balance in the Makran division. As a veteran politician who has served in the cabinets of multiple Chief Ministers, Shah’s departure weakens BNP-M’s influence in the Kech region ahead of upcoming local and regional deliberations.
A History of Political Shifts
Syed Ehsan Shah is no stranger to party restructuring. His political journey includes:
- BNP-Awami: Long-term association before internal rifts in 2018.
- PNP-Awami (2019): Launched his own platform to maintain his independent Kech power base.
- BNP-M Merger (2023): Merged to “unite nationalist voices” before today’s reversal.
With this revival, Shah aims to position PNP (Awami) as a more flexible and pragmatically focused alternative for the people of Southern Balochistan.
