KARACHI: Sindhi Culture Day was marked across Karachi and the wider province on Sunday with traditional enthusiasm, as celebratory rallies, music performances and cultural displays highlighted Sindh’s deep-rooted heritage and its message of peace, tolerance and unity.

In Karachi, processions emerged from various neighbourhoods before converging outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC), the central venue for the day’s festivities. A large musical programme was held outside the KPC, where thousands of participants — including families, women and children — gathered to take part in the celebrations.

Wearing traditional Ajrak, Sindhi caps and colourful regional attire, attendees danced to folk tunes and listened to performances by well-known singers, who presented works of Sindh’s revered poets, including Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. Artists such as Ahmed Mughal, Komal Naz, Sindh Rani, the Marvel Group, Dua, Faqir Mohammed Hasan and Kamran Solangi performed throughout the evening, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

Organisers said this year’s celebration carried a series of special themes, including “Empower Women, Prosper Sindh” and “Free Sindh from Narcotics,” aimed at creating public awareness alongside cultural expression.

Unlike previous years, leaders of several nationalist groups did not attend the main gathering. Instead, speeches were delivered primarily by prominent speakers, poets and media personalities. The speakers highlighted Sindh’s centuries-old civilisation and its strong Sufi traditions, which they said embody values of humanity, harmony and coexistence.

They noted that Sindhi Culture Day served as a reminder to protect cultural heritage and uphold the values passed on through generations. Some speakers also called for the expulsion of illegal immigrants from the province, asserting that demographic changes risked unsettling Sindh’s social fabric.

Poet Mahar Dribai said the people of Sindh opposed any attempt to divide the province and urged Urdu-speaking communities to “reject any conspiracy” aimed at creating discord. Anchorperson Mushtaq Sarki referenced Punjab’s decision to remove undocumented Afghan nationals and urged Sindh authorities to follow suit.

Other speakers, including Dodo Chandio, Aslam Haider Solangi, Bakhshan Mehranvi, Raja Memon, Suhni Paras and Zulfiqar Ali Abro, also addressed the gathering. They encouraged participants to celebrate peacefully, respect other cultures and faiths and uphold the spirit of coexistence central to Sindh’s identity.

Sindhi Culture Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of December and has evolved into one of the province’s most vibrant expressions of cultural pride.
