LAHORE — Police have launched a criminal investigation into the owners of a private tuition center and their construction contractor after a sudden roof collapse in the Kahna area killed 14 children and left six others injured.
The disaster occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the ceiling of a residential home, which had been converted into an after-school academy, caved in entirely while a class was in session.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Kahna police station on a complaint by Kashif Aslam, an official with the Lahore Metropolitan Corporation. The suspects face charges under Section 322 (manslaughter) and Section 337-H (hurt caused by a rash or negligent act) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the police report, the property was owned by four individuals: Rehan, Faizan, Usman, and Umar. At the time of the collapse, Rehan’s wife was teaching a room full of students. She was among those injured when the roof gave way.
Investigators revealed that while the children were inside studying, the owners and a contractor named Umair were actively dumping heavy soil onto the roof of the building. The structure was already in a heavily dilapidated condition, and the added weight caused an instant, catastrophic structural failure.
Lahore DIG Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed that two individuals—including the property owner and the builder—have already been arrested as part of the initial probe.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered district government and police authorities to pursue strict criminal proceedings against everyone responsible for the structural negligence.
This marks the second major classroom infrastructure failure in Punjab within the last two months. A nearly identical incident occurred in Dera Ghazi Khan, where four children died after a school roof collapsed under the weight of illegally stored construction sand and bricks.
