The cinematic future of Pakistan was on dazzling display this week as Ziauddin University’s College of Media Sciences hosted the third annual ‘Nazariya’ Film Festival. Concluding on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the festival, themed “Roots & Routes” served as a powerful reminder that the nation’s next generation of storytellers is ready to tackle complex themes with artistic courage and technical mastery.
The event celebrated the creativity and freedom of expression of emerging filmmakers, whose bold narratives explored themes of connection, movement, and the ways origins and journeys shape modern Pakistani identity.
Honoring the Torchbearers
A moving highlight of the festival was the tribute paid to the industry’s veterans. Legendary actress Bushra Ansari was presented with a richly deserved Lifetime Achievement Award. Her message to the young, aspiring participants cut to the core of artistic authenticity: “Only when your soul flows into your words will it reach the hearts of others. Write from the heart.” This provided a clear mandate for the new wave of cinema: be true to your voice.

The festival curated and screened around 100 short films and documentaries, offering a vibrant snapshot of the industry’s depth. The top awards confirmed a shift toward sophisticated and introspective filmmaking.
Pin Drop Silence swept the major categories, securing the highly coveted award for Best Short Film alongside wins for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Design.
The documentary Soul of the Mountain claimed Best Documentary and Best Editing, confirming the strength of non-fiction storytelling.

Dialogue and Defiance
Beyond the screens, engaging panel discussions saw industry figures like writer Zafar Mairaj emphasize the timeless essence of storytelling, while performer Kaif Ghazanavi characterized narratives as a form of “healing.”
Though producers debated the eternal challenge of balancing artistic integrity with commercial demand, the prevailing sentiment was one of optimism. The festival closed with the confidence that the new generation is equipped to drive Pakistan’s narrative agenda forward, proving that the most authentic stories, those about roots and routes, are the ones destined to travel the farthest.
