The National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, has kicked off its inaugural NCA Triennale 2025, a landmark international festival dedicated to art, design, and cultural dialogue. Launched recently on November 1st, the event is the centerpiece of the institution’s 150th-anniversary celebrations, marking 150 years since its founding as the Mayo School of Art in 1875. The Triennale is being hailed as the first major arts and culture festival of its kind organized by an academic institution in Pakistan, positioning Lahore as a vibrant cultural nexus on the global map.
The Guiding Philosophy: “Kasb-e-Kamal Kun”
The festival operates under the profound theme, “Kasb-e-Kamal Kun,” which is derived from NCA’s historic and poetic motto: “Kasb-e-Kamal Kun ke Aziz-e-Jahan Shavi” – the poetic aphorism is a romance with memory and being remembered. It is a reminder that you will be remembered with admiration, fondness, and endearment for what you have matured through your hand. This theme pivots the focus away from the rigid dichotomy between art and craft. Instead, it champions the mastery of the working hand, viewing making processes, whether through traditional artisanal methods or contemporary digital techniques, as a profound alchemy of psychological, social, and cultural expression. Organizers explicitly encourage looking at themes like the preservation of material culture, craft-oriented histories of migration, and the “poetics of the handmade,” signaling a deep engagement with heritage in a modern context.
International Scale and National Vision
The Triennale has successfully drawn a vast, diverse pool of participants, featuring over 200 national and international artists. The representation spans countries including Europe, China, Iran, the United Kingdom, and Palestine, confirming its ambition as a truly global event. Dignitaries, including the Federal Minister for Education, attended the grand opening, using the platform to underscore the national commitment to cultural preservation amid modern challenges.

Furthermore, the event carries a significant national policy tie-in: the Minister announced the establishment of a new NCA campus in Karachi later this year. This move directly supports the Triennale’s ethos of promoting arts and culture education nationwide, ensuring the legacy of excellence embodied by the Lahore campus expands its reach across Pakistan. The month-long festival is structured with artist residencies, exhibitions, film screenings, and performances, transforming the NCA campus into a dynamic hub of cross-disciplinary conversation until its closing ceremonies at the end of November. This initiative cements the NCA’s role not just as an educational institute, but as a custodian and promoter of Pakistan’s evolving cultural narrative on the world stage.
The opening ceremony featured live performances, including a notable musical showcase, reflecting the breadth of disciplines celebrated at the Triennale.
