In a historic leap toward digital transformation, Pakistan successfully concluded its inaugural 5G spectrum auction on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) raised $507 million through the sale of 480 MHz of spectrum across several frequency bands, heralding the arrival of next-generation mobile services in the country.
Who Won What?
All three participating telecom operators successfully secured the minimum 100 MHz required, with Jazz emerging as the largest buyer.

| Jazz (PMCL) | 190 MHz | 700MHz (20), 2300MHz (50), 2600MHz (70), 3500MHz (50) | ~$239.5m |
| Ufone 4G (PTML) | 180 MHz | 2600MHz (60), 3500MHz (120) | ~$190m+ |
| Zong 4G (CMPak) | 110 MHz | 2600MHz (60), 3500MHz (50) | ~$140m+ |
Regional Benchmarks and Digital Progress
IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted that before this auction, Pakistan was “spectrum-starved,” operating on one of the lowest spectrum allocations in the region.
- The Upgrade: The 5G rollout will not only introduce high-speed internet but is also expected to significantly decongest and improve the quality of existing 4G services.
- Transparency: The entire bidding process was broadcast live to ensure public trust, a first for such a large-scale telecom auction in Pakistan.
When and Where Can You Get 5G?
The government and operators have signaled a rapid transition for early adopters:
- Timeline: Jazz CEO Aamir Ibrahim announced that the company already has 180 sites ready for 5G deployment, with test trials potentially starting as early as this week.
- Launch Locations: The first phase will focus on Islamabad and the four provincial capitals—Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.
- Mass Adoption: All major Pakistani cities are expected to have access to 5G services by the end of 2026.
“This is like replacing Pakistan’s development engine with a much more powerful one. Now the ball is in the court of the telecom industry to build the infrastructure for nationwide deployment.” — Hafeez Ur Rehman, PTA Chairman.
The Assignment Stage
While the quantity of spectrum has been sold, the Assignment Stage will take place tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, 2026. During this phase, operators will determine their specific frequency positions (upper, middle, or lower) within the bands they have won. Once finalized, the PTA will issue the formal licenses, allowing for immediate network optimization.
