WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal Minister for Energy Ali Pervaiz Malik is representing Pakistan at the inaugural Critical Minerals Ministerial at the US Department of State on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The two-day summit, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, brings together delegations from over 50 nations to diversify global supply chains and counter the current dominance of certain players in the critical minerals market.

The Summit Agenda
The ministerial aims to secure resources vital to “technological innovation, economic strength, and national security.” Key speakers include:
- Marco Rubio (Secretary of State): Host of the ministerial and press sessions.
- J.D. Vance (Vice President): Scheduled to deliver opening remarks emphasizing US technological leadership.
- Global Participants: Large delegations from G7 nations, India, South Korea, Australia, and resource-rich African nations like the DRC (represented by President Félix Tshisekedi).
Pakistan’s Strategic Pitch
Minister Malik’s mission in Washington is to position Pakistan as a “credible, non-aligned destination” for strategic mineral investment.
- Untapped Wealth: Pakistan is highlighting its estimated $6 trillion in mineral potential, specifically focusing on copper, gold, and rare earth elements (REEs).
- Value Addition: The delegation is pitching for the establishment of domestic processing plants and smelters, moving away from the simple export of raw materials.
- The $500M US Pact: Pakistan is building on a landmark agreement signed in September 2025 between the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and US Strategic Metals (USSM). That deal involves the development of a poly-metallic refinery to process antimony, copper, and tungsten for US defense and energy sectors.

Balancing the “Great Power” Rivalry
Pakistan is performing a delicate diplomatic balancing act by engaging both Washington and Beijing simultaneously:
- The China Factor: Just last week (Jan 28), Islamabad launched the “Pak–China E-Mining Platform” and signed MoUs for a $10 billion Chinese investment in the minerals sector.
- The PMIF 2026: Minister Malik has formally invited both US and Chinese firms to the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum (PMIF), scheduled for April 8–9, 2026, in Islamabad.
- The Goal: By inviting both powers, Pakistan hopes to integrate its “Tethyan Belt” (home to Reko Diq) into global supply chains without becoming a casualty of the US-China trade war.
Pakistan’s Critical Minerals Priority List
| Mineral | Strategic Importance | Major Project/Partner |
| Copper & Gold | Electronics & EVs | Reko Diq (Barrick Gold), Saindak (MCC) |
| Antimony | Defense & Batteries | US Strategic Metals (USSM) |
| Rare Earths | High-tech & Energy | New exploration blocks in Balochistan/KP |
| Lithium | Battery Storage | Upcoming surveys in Gilgit-Baltistan |
Minister Malik is expected to hold a series of one-on-one meetings with US industry leaders following the ministerial.
