In a landmark move, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have inked a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, pledging that any attack on either country will be considered an act of aggression against both. The pact, signed in Riyadh on Wednesday, reflects the two nations’ shared resolve to strengthen regional security and deepen military cooperation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman led the signing ceremony at the historic Yamama Palace, in the presence of high-ranking officials including Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman.

Pact Builds on Historic Partnership
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the agreement is grounded in a partnership spanning nearly eight decades, based on “brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and strategic defence cooperation.” The document aims to enhance deterrence capabilities and ensure peace in the wider region.
During talks, both sides reviewed their longstanding ties and explored avenues of expanded collaboration. PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for the warm welcome, highlighting the Saudi leadership’s role in supporting Pakistan during critical times. In turn, the Crown Prince conveyed best wishes for Pakistan’s prosperity and reaffirmed Riyadh’s commitment to stronger bilateral ties.
Upon arrival in Riyadh, PM Shehbaz was escorted by Saudi Air Force jets—a symbolic show of respect and solidarity. The premier was officially received by Riyadh’s Deputy Governor Muhammad bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz before heading to the palace for talks.
The Foreign Office noted that Shehbaz’s visit was at the invitation of the Crown Prince. Officials confirmed that discussions also touched on regional and global issues of mutual interest, with the leaders emphasizing the need to expand cooperation beyond defence into trade, energy, and cultural exchange.

Strategic Significance
Analysts say the defence pact signals a stronger military alliance at a time of shifting regional dynamics. With both nations facing common security challenges, the agreement underscores their intent to act in unison against external threats.
The visit comes months after Pakistan and Saudi Arabia engaged in multiple rounds of high-level talks, including President Asif Zardari’s July meeting with Saudi officials on boosting trade and investment. PM Shehbaz had also met the Crown Prince in June, where discussions focused on regional peace efforts.
