Crafting a Legacy: Pakistani Designers Dazzle at Dubai Design Week

The recently concluded Dubai Design Week (DDW), which wrapped up on November 9, 2025, served as a powerful reminder of the sophisticated craftsmanship emerging from Pakistan. Amid a global showcase of innovation, the presence of Pakistani talent was notable, particularly in demonstrating how centuries-old techniques can be seamlessly integrated into modern, high-end product design.

A standout moment came from the UAE Designer Exhibition, where the Lahore-based team of architect Yousef Shahbaz and his mother, Saira Ahsan, unveiled their debut furniture collection, aptly named “Strata.”

A Story in Mother-of-Pearl

The “Strata” collection was quickly recognized for its unique emotional resonance and exceptional technical quality. The designers focused on the intricate art of mother-of-pearl inlay, a highly demanding decorative technique steeped in South Asian history. By applying this delicate, labor-intensive craft to contemporary furniture pieces, they created objects that were both visually striking and rich with cultural meaning.

Shahbaz emphasized that the furniture was a narrative, saying, “This is our story, told through material.” This approach reflects a growing movement among Pakistani designers to reposition traditional craft from being merely decorative to being a defining element of sophisticated, functional design.

Defining Regional Aesthetics

The success of “Strata” at DDW also speaks to a shared artistic heritage across the region. Shahbaz’s architectural background often draws inspiration from the flowing aesthetics and sense of contained luxury found in traditional Middle Eastern and Moroccan design. This connection allows their work to resonate instantly with the high-end, culturally aware audience present in Dubai, reinforcing the idea that Pakistani design is a crucial part of the broader MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia) creative landscape.

Furthermore, DDW’s overarching theme, “In the Details,” perfectly suited the strengths of the Pakistani delegation. This call to explore the “precision and cultural nuance through the lens of ornamentalism” played directly into the hands of designers trained in the exacting standards of subcontinental craft.

In essence, the performance of designers like Shahbaz and Ahsan at Dubai Design Week confirms that Pakistani creativity is no longer just a domestic phenomenon. It is an internationally recognized force that skillfully combines heritage, technical precision, and compelling emotional depth to shape the future of global design.
