Remand Extended for Construction Firm Owners on Bhati Gate Tragedy

Feb 5, 2026 | Crime & Law

LAHORE — A judicial magistrate on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, extended the physical remand of five suspects for an additional five days in the high-profile Bhati Gate manhole tragedy case. The incident, which occurred on January 28, resulted in the deaths of Sadia (24) and her 10-month-old daughter, Rida Fatima, who fell into an uncovered manhole at an under-construction site.

Magistrate Shafqat Abbas presided over the hearing, where the Investigating Officer (IO) requested a 10-day extension, citing that the suspects, including the owners of the private firm SMS Design and Engineering System, had not yet disclosed critical information.

Key Developments in Court

  • Suspects in Custody: The five individuals currently on remand include the company’s owners, Salman Yasin and Usman Yasin, along with safety officials identified in the FIR as Project Manager Asghar Sandhu, Site In-charge Ahmed Nawaz, and Safety In-charge Daniyal Shamil.
  • Allegations of Torture: During the hearing, Salman Yasin broke down in tears, alleging that he had been subjected to sleep deprivation and harsh conditions in the lockup, claiming investigators questioned him throughout the night in a space where he could neither sit nor stand properly.
  • The “Rs 10 Million” Dispute: The defense counsel stated that the contractor had voluntarily surrendered and presented a Rs 10 million cheque to the police for the victims’ family. However, the father of the deceased, Sajid Hussain, informed the court that the family has not yet received any compensation or cheque.
  • Defense Stance: Advocate Ahmad Chicher argued that the construction work at the Bhati Gate site was already completed and had been handed over to WASA (Water and Sanitation Agency), suggesting that the contractor should no longer be held responsible for the site’s maintenance.

A “Criminal Negligence” Inquiry

The tragedy was initially met with an alleged attempt to deflect blame.

  • The Initial Cover-up: Police initially detained the victim’s husband, Murtaza, on suspicion of murder, with reports emerging that he was tortured to suppress the case.
  • CM’s Intervention: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz intervened, ordering a fact-finding inquiry that declared three senior police officers (including the SP City and SHO) guilty of negligence and misconduct for their treatment of the grieving family.
  • The Victims: Sadia and Rida Fatima had traveled to Lahore from Shorkot (Jhang) to visit Data Darbar. They fell into the manhole while attempting to board a rickshaw. Sadia’s body was recovered 3km away, while the infant’s body was found after a 16-hour rescue operation.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The court has directed the IO to submit a comprehensive progress report on February 9, 2026. Additionally:

  • Government Accountability: The defense highlighted that no government officials from WASA or LDA have been arrested yet, despite the Chief Minister’s vow that “everyone will be held accountable.”
  • Post-mortem Findings: Medical reports have already confirmed that both victims suffered fatal fractures from the fall.
