PMD Forecasts Light Rain, Mountain Snowfall in Northern Areas Today

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast light rain accompanied by Snowfall in Northern Areas today (Dec 5), as a shallow westerly wave moves across the region.

According to the Met Office, the weather system is expected to impact the northern parts of Pakistan from the night of Dec 4 to Dec 5, bringing mostly cloudy conditions and isolated precipitation to Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, and Battagram.

Cold, Dry Weather Elsewhere

While northern areas experience winter precipitation, cold and dry weather is likely to prevail across most other regions of the country. No significant change in weather patterns is expected in central and southern Pakistan.

Smog and Fog to Persist in Plains

The PMD warned that smoggy and foggy conditions will continue to blanket the plains of Punjab—including Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Jhelum, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan, Khanewal, Layyah, Kot Addu, and Bahawalpur—and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, notably Peshawar, Swabi, Mardan, and Dera Ismail Khan.

These conditions are expected to intensify during nighttime and early morning hours, potentially affecting visibility and posing challenges for transport and daily commuting.

Possible Impacts and Travel Advisory

The Met Office cautioned that dense smog and fog may disrupt road and air travel in Punjab and KP. In northern regions, light snowfall may result in road closures and slippery conditions at higher altitudes, particularly around Babusar and adjoining areas.

Temperature Drop Ahead

Daytime temperatures in upper parts of the country are likely to dip by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius in the coming days as the westerly system progresses.

The PMD advised travellers to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to snowfall and fog, and urged authorities to remain prepared for weather-related disruptions.
