01 Police Constable Martyred, 04 Injured Protecting Polio Workers in Hangu

PESHAWAR (April 13, 2026) — On what was supposed to be a day of hope and healing, the first day of the nationwide polio vaccination drive was met with tragedy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A police constable was martyred and four of his colleagues were injured this morning after terrorists ambushed their patrol in Thall, Hangu, as they were heading to secure a frontline vaccination team.

The Human Cost of Duty

The attack, the first of its kind against security personnel this year, claimed the life of a dedicated officer—a man whose morning task was simply to ensure that health workers could safely give life-saving drops to children. While the police retaliated swiftly, reportedly killing two attackers before they fled with their accomplices’ bodies, the cost to the law enforcement family remains heavy.

  • The Fallen: One police constable martyred in the line of duty.

  • The Wounded: Four officers currently receiving emergency care at a local hospital.

  • The Response: A large-scale search operation is underway in Thall to track the assailants.

Defiance in the Face of Fear

Despite the violence, the spirit of the campaign remains unbroken. District authorities confirmed that the vaccination drive in Hangu will proceed as scheduled. “Terrorists cannot demoralize this nation,” the Hangu Police stated, echoing a sentiment of resilience that has defined Pakistan’s long struggle to eradicate the virus.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the ambush as a “cowardly act” against those on national duty. He vowed that the provincial government would stand firmly by the bereaved family and ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.

The Dangerous Path to Eradication

Pakistan remains one of the last two countries where polio is endemic, and the path to a polio-free future is paved with the bravery of men like the fallen constable. Since 2012, the battle has cost the lives of 61 policemen and 27 health workers in KP alone.

As teams continue to knock on doors from April 13 to 19, they do so under the shadow of this loss, protected by a force that continues to put itself between the community and those who seek to disrupt its progress.
