PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) workers and leaders staged protests across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday against the court verdict sentencing party founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years’ imprisonment in the Toshakhana-II case.
In Peshawar, protesters gathered on the main GT Road outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building, where they chanted slogans in support of Imran Khan and criticised the federal government. Several PTI lawmakers were also present at the demonstration.
Addressing the gathering, PTI MNA Shandana Gulzar said that Imran Khan had been striving for the rights of citizens and future generations. She claimed that the former prime minister had never sought personal benefit and was advocating for the underprivileged. Other speakers at the protest described the verdict as politically motivated.
Former provincial cabinet member Kamran Khan Bangash called for unity among political parties to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law. He termed the verdict against Imran Khan and his wife “baseless” and alleged that interference in the judiciary, politics, bureaucracy and parliament could further destabilise the situation. He also stated that the PTI supported the armed forces when they acted within their constitutional role.
PTI’s provincial deputy information secretary Ikram Khattan alleged that constitutional amendments had weakened judicial independence and claimed that Imran Khan was being politically targeted. He said that other individuals who had received gifts from the Toshakhana had not faced similar scrutiny.
Similar protests were held in several other districts of the province. In Mansehra, PTI activists took out a rally led by provincial vice-president Kamal Saleem Swati. The rally began from the party’s central secretariat, passed through various city roads and concluded at the same location. Participants carried banners and placards and chanted slogans against the federal government.

Addressing the rally, Mr Swati said the party would continue to raise its voice against what he described as an unjust verdict and would convey Imran Khan’s message across the country.

The protest was led by MNA Sajid Khan Mohmand, MPA Mahboob Sher and local party leaders, and was attended by workers and residents.

Protests were also reported from Bajaur district, where demonstrations were held in Mamund, Khar and Barang tehsils. Protesters carrying party flags chanted slogans against the federal government and rejected the verdict.
PTI leaders across the province reiterated that the protests were aimed at drawing attention to what they termed political victimisation and alleged shortcomings in the judicial process.
