Beyond CPEC: The “Year of the Horse” Gallops into Islamabad

Mar 2, 2026 | Art & Culture, China

The deepening bond between Pakistan and China took a vibrant, cultural turn in late February 2026. While the world often focuses on the multi-billion dollar infrastructure of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad shifted the spotlight to “soft power” by hosting a spectacular Spring Festival celebration themed “Chinese New Year, China-Pakistan Go Together.”

A Night of Iron-Clad Traditions

The event transformed the embassy grounds into a bridge between two ancient cultures. Attendees, including Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, swapped formal briefings for the “Year of the Horse” festivities. The “Horse,” a symbol of strength, speed, and forward momentum in Chinese culture, was frequently cited as a metaphor for the current trajectory of the bilateral partnership.

Diplomacy through Dumplings and Poetry

The evening was a masterclass in cultural exchange, proving that the most effective diplomacy often happens over a meal or a verse. Guests, including Pakistani officials and students, participated in hands-on dumpling-making sessions, a staple Spring Festival tradition symbolizing wealth and togetherness.

Mohammad Kamran, a student from the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), captivated the audience by reciting the ancient Chinese poem “The Moon over the River on a Spring Night,” showcasing the growing linguistic fluency among Pakistani youth.

Traditional Chinese tea ceremonies and calligraphy demonstrations allowed local guests to experience the meditative side of Chinese heritage.

The New Frontier: Arts and Residencies

Minister Malik highlighted that while energy and mining projects like Reko Diq remain vital, the future of the relationship lies in “people-to-people connectivity.” Reports from the event indicated a renewed commitment to joint film and arts residencies for 2026, aimed at encouraging Pakistani and Chinese creators to collaborate on storytelling that resonates across both borders.
