ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Friday.
According to the FO statement, the two leaders exchanged views on expanding collaboration in key sectors, including agriculture, mining, and minerals, as well as enhancing cooperation under the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA).

Anand thanked Pakistan for facilitating market access for Canadian canola exports, a move that has supported trade between the two countries. Both ministers, the FO said, appreciated the recent positive engagements and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing “mutually beneficial economic cooperation.” They also agreed to remain in close contact to follow up on the discussions.

In a post on social media platform X, the Canadian foreign minister confirmed the conversation, noting that the two had discussed “opening up Pakistan to imports of Canadian canola, the FIPPA model, and broader bilateral economic engagement.” She also thanked Dar for “productive meetings” held earlier in Kuala Lumpur and New York, as well as for the recent phone call.

Pakistan and Canada maintain trade relations primarily focused on agricultural commodities. Pakistan imports pulses and canola seeds from Canada, while its exports to North America are largely dominated by textile and apparel products.
Official data shows that Pakistan’s exports to North America rose by nearly 10 percent in fiscal year 2024–25, reaching $6.415 billion compared to $5.833 billion the previous year. The United States accounted for the vast majority of those exports — approximately 94 percent — with the remainder directed toward Canada.
Officials said that both sides view the latest engagement as part of a broader effort to diversify economic relations and attract foreign investment into Pakistan’s key growth sectors.
