LAHORE, October 16: The Punjab government announced on Thursday its decision to recommend a federal ban on the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), following violent clashes and mass arrests triggered by the group’s recent protest march.
The announcement came after an “extraordinary meeting” on law and order chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. According to an official statement, the meeting resulted in “historic decisions” aimed at asserting the state’s writ and ensuring the supremacy of law.

Though the official communiqué did not name the group, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed that the decisions were directed at the TLP. One of the most significant moves includes the provincial government’s intent to recommend the group’s formal proscription to the federal cabinet.
The CM Office further stated that the TLP’s leadership will be placed on the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997—a list of individuals suspected of terrorism or sectarian violence. Additional measures include freezing the party’s bank accounts, dismantling its social media presence, and seizing all properties and assets, which will be transferred to the Punjab Auqaf Department.

Authorities also announced that cases involving attacks on police and state property would be tried in anti-terrorism courts, and those involved in hate speech or incitement will be arrested immediately.
This crackdown follows a large-scale police operation on Monday to dismantle a TLP protest camp in Muridke, which resulted in violent confrontations. Over 2,700 arrests have been made, and nearly 2,800 individuals have been barred from leaving the country.
Additionally, the government has appointed special prosecutors to pursue terrorism cases against TLP activists in Lahore and Sheikhupura. The appointments are aimed at ensuring efficient prosecution and coordination with investigators and joint investigation teams.
