SUKKUR: Ten suspected gang members were killed and four policemen, including two deputy superintendents of police, critically wounded during an intense gun battle in Shikarpur’s Manchhar area on Tuesday, according to officials.

A police statement said City DSP Paras Bakhrani, Garhi Yasin DSP Zahoor Soomro and two constables sustained serious injuries when armed suspects opened fire on a police team conducting a raid. The team had travelled to the area after receiving information regarding a group allegedly involved in robbing Rs2.6 million from a grain trader in Shikarpur’s Anaj Mandi a day earlier.

Shikarpur SSP Shahzaib Chachar told reporters that the suspects, accompanied by several heavily armed associates, were challenged by the police but immediately responded with “indiscriminate fire”. A prolonged exchange ensued, during which 10 suspects were shot dead while the surviving members of the group managed to flee.

He added that reinforcements were called in and adjoining villages were cordoned off. A house-to-house search operation was under way to track down the remaining suspects. Eight of the deceased were identified as Gul Mohammad, his sons Shahzado alias Shaddo and Shahmore, his brother Sajid, and Imdad, Ayaz and Owais, all belonging to the Shaikh community, along with Ghulam Mohammad, son of Sadiq Bakhrani.
